The Elmore County Commission honored Wetumpka High School Freshman Kolby Smith, March 9, 2026, at the Elmore County Courthouse in recognition of his recent wrestling achievement.

Smith competed in the 113-pound weight class, finishing the season with a 39-2 record and claiming the Class 6A state championship title through the Alabama High School Athletic Association (AHSAA).

“He told me last year coming in that he was going to win the state title this year,” said Wetumpka Head Wrestling Coach Josh Highland. “You know, you have kids that tell you that, and they work hard, but sometimes, it doesn’t happen, but he did exactly what he said he was going to do.”

Highland said Smith showed strong determination and focus throughout the season, consistently putting in the work required to compete at a high level while using his two losses as motivation to improve and refine his performance on the mat.

Following remarks from Highland, commissioners praised Smith for his hard work and dedication to the sport and challenged him to defend his title in the seasons ahead.

“Great job,” said District 1 Commissioner Henry Hines. “Being an old Wetumpka wrestler myself, I look forward to three more years of watching you [Smith] come up here. We appreciate your leadership and time. Some people talk the talk, but he [Smith] walks the walk.”
