The Stanhope Elmore Boys’ bowling team traveled to the Bolero in Mobile and clinched the Class 6A/7A state championship on January 30. It was the first state championship in the history of the boys’ program. The SE girls’ team won the state championship in 2024.
According to al.com, the Mustangs faced the Hoover Buccaneers in the double elimination format state tournament. While the Mustangs sent Hoover to the consolation bracket early, the Bucs came back and forced the final game of the tournament. Stanhope Elmore initially trailed by 50 pins, but came back to win the title by 37 pins, 1,586 to 1,559.
“It feels good (to win the state championship),” said Stanhope Elmore Bowling Coach Wilson. “It’s been a long time coming! We’ve had championship caliber teams over the past several years but could never get everybody on the same page at the same time during the State Tournament.”
The Mustangs’ boys bowling team only had six bowlers. While five bowlers bowl during a match, the small roster didn’t leave much room for the Mustangs if players had to miss or were not feeling well.
“Our biggest adversity this season was definitely the lack of depth we had on our team. We only had a six man team, which didn’t give us any room for subbing players out if they were tired, struggling, or injured,” said Coach Wilson.
Ryan Best, Seth Wilson, and Drake Abbott were each named to the All Area team. Best placed 2nd at Regionals while Wilson tied for 1st and Abbott tied for 7th. Best is looking to bowl in college at Webber University in Florida.
“During the season, our anchor bowler, Ryan Best, really showed tremendous growth in his game and in his attitude. As a whole, every bowler on this boys’ team improved their game. In addition to their physical game, they all bought in to the concept of working together as a team. They held each other accountable, encouraged each other, and pushed each other to be the best they could be. That commitment to each other is what ultimately led them to a state championship win,” said Coach Wilson.
