Wetumpka High School agriscience instructor, Clay Mims introduced some of the school’s FFA chapter officers and updates during the Elmore County Board of Education’s regular meeting on Jan. 20, 2026.

Makinley Torres, WHS FFA reporter, spoke about National FFA Week, which will be observed from Feb. 23–27. On Tuesday, Feb. 24, members will attend FFA Day at Capitol Hill, where they will meet with state representatives to discuss agricultural education and agricultural issues.

“I think this is important because it just shows us so much more about ag education and why it is important and why it is a thing,” said Torres.

During the meeting, WHS FFA members distributed invitations to board members, inviting WHS faculty, staff, and supporters to attend the National FFA Week breakfast on Thursday, Feb. 26, in the Wetumpka High School library as a way to give back to their community.

Chloe Ford, WHS FFA chapter president, has been a member of the Wetumpka Swine Team for two years. Other team members include Luke Wyatt and Brylee Murry.

“I think this is a great opportunity for us because we are learning so much over the years,” said Ford.

The team has competed at the Elmore County Market Show, where Wyatt earned champion market and champion showmanship honors. Murry received reserve champion market and reserve champion showmanship.

Brylee Murry, WHS FFA secretary, shared insights on why she joined the organization.

“I have not been able to settle into any clubs or organizations when we moved here, but when I started ag here, I was like, I did not know what ag was until now. Which is why it is really important to add agricultural into our middle schools! Thanks to Richard Dennis, we can hopefully start our pilot full-time ag program by next year, which will help future generations to come,” said Murry.

Mims concluded by explaining the importance of attending FFA Day at Capitol Hill.

“It is a good opportunity for these students to go.
We have appointments with our representatives and senators that day. We will get to talk to them and discuss issues and ag education and agriculture abroad.”
