From: Andrew Stieb, Tourism Manager
City of Wetumpka
The City of Wetumpka is pleased to announce that it has received a Grant from the Alabama Power Foundation to support the development of a formalized trail access plan for the Wetumpka Impact Crater, one of Alabama’s most significant geological and tourism assets.
This planning effort will be completed in partnership with the Wetumpka Impact Crater Commission and will evaluate opportunities for a potential future trail system that enhances public access, educational programming, and visitor experiences. The proposed trail plan will examine sustainable route options, access points, roadway connections, and land considerations within and around the crater area.
“The Wetumpka Impact Crater is a remarkable natural resource that attracts visitors from across the country,” said Mayor Jerry Willis. “We are grateful for the Alabama Power Foundation’s support as we take this important step toward exploring access and creating a more immersive experience for our residents and guests.”
With more than 10,000 visitors estimated to explore the crater area each year, interest in Wetumpka’s unique geological story continues to grow. The trail access plan will provide a clear, actionable framework to guide future investment, phased development, and additional grant opportunities.
We’re excited to explore new opportunities for outdoor recreation, education, and science-based tourism. We hope this planning process will help shape the future of how people experience the crater in a meaningful and sustainable way.
The planning phase is expected to take six to eight months and will involve collaboration with consulting professionals, local stakeholders, and scientific partners, including Auburn University’s Department of Geosciences.
The City of Wetumpka and the Wetumpka Impact Crater Commission extend their appreciation to the Alabama Power Foundation for its continued commitment to community development, environmental stewardship, and educational advancement across the state.
