The classic 1946 film “It’s a Wonderful Life” is based on a short story called “The Greatest Gift.” This work has been converted into a radio play complete with on-stage sound effects and actors playing multiple parts. The play is being staged at Tallassee’s Mount Vernon Theatre, which was a live performance venue from 1938-1968. The theatre sat, closed, until 2018 when a community group renovated it; after just a few performances it closed again until 2024.
The play is all about a small-town businessman named George Bailey, who dreams big but is “stuck” running his family building and loan, and when a sequence of very bad events happen, he wishes he were never born. Despite the support from his wife Mary and his friends, a despondent George decides to end it all until he’s interrupted by Clarence, his guardian angel, who shows George what his small town would be like had he never come along.
It’s a Wonderful Life will be performed on December 12th and 13th in Tallassee. The cast includes Caleb Beard as George Bailey; Abbey Achord as Mary Bailey; Jason Carples as Clarence; and several others in a variety of roles.
