From Larry Caver, President
Old Autauga Historical Society
Recently the Old Autauga Historical Society marked a huge milestone. We completed the roof project at Vine Hill Presbyterian Church (1887). This was the last major item on our to do list.
We started out five years ago on this project. There was a rotten floor in the sanctuary and some missing window panels. There was a huge leak between the belfry and the main sanctuary roof. The foyer floor and interior wall were rotted out. We began with almost nothing but our sweat and determination to do all we could to save this historic gem. There have been thousands of man hours put into restoration. We started out doing the work with only private donations. Along the way we were blessed with a grant from the Alabama Historic Commission and most recently a grant from Mid-South RC & D. These funds were truly helpful. However, for every grant dollar we received there has probably been another dollar or more that came from private donations. As with the belfry tower project, we received $11,000 from a grant but also raised another $17,000 by selling cakes and from private gifts to cover the total expense of $28,000.
We thank our membership and the folks of Autauga County who have believed in us and helped to save this beautiful old church in the Wildwood! The mite of many can move mountains! We look forward to many blue grass and gospel music events at Vine Hill Church. We look forward to club meetings and other special events along the way! And we look forward to the day that little country weddings are held in this beautiful old church in the Wildwood!
