What was once a quiet downtown with vacant storefronts and untapped potential has transformed into a thriving destination over the past decade, thanks to years of investment, partnerships and a shared vision for the city’s future.

Main Street Wetumpka marked its 10th anniversary on June 3 and spent the month of June celebrating the milestone while reflecting on the organization’s role in revitalizing the heart of downtown.

Since its founding in 2016, Main Street Wetumpka has worked alongside business owners, volunteers, local governments and community partners to preserve the city’s historic character while encouraging new investment and growth.

Executive Director Haley Greene, who has served in the role for the past five years, said the most significant change has not been the renovated buildings or improved streetscapes, but the renewed confidence people have in downtown.

“What was once a bustling business district and a place that held so much history, and potential has once again become a vibrant destination,” said Greene.

The transformation extends beyond what visitors see when they walk through downtown.

“It has been the shift in energy, pride and momentum throughout our community,” said Greene. “The greatest accomplishment of the last decade is that people believe in downtown Wetumpka again, and that belief is what continues to drive our progress forward.”

That progress has only been possible because of collaboration among businesses, local leaders, volunteers and residents who have remained committed to downtown’s success.

She said the partnerships formed over the past decade have strengthened not only the downtown business district but also the community as a whole.

“Main Street Wetumpka has been fortunate to work alongside incredible partners who understand that a strong downtown creates economic opportunities, strengthens community pride and improves quality of life for everyone,” Greene said. “Our progress over the last decade is truly a reflection of what can happen when people come together with a shared goal, stay committed and refuse to give up.”

The organization’s work has helped reshape downtown into a place where businesses, residents and visitors gather throughout the year for shopping, dining, entertainment and community events.

“The revitalization of our downtown has created more than just economic or visual impact,” Greene said. “It has created a place.”

She said downtown has become a place where entrepreneurs can pursue their dreams, families can create traditions and visitors can experience what makes Wetumpka unique.

The investment in downtown reflects that commitment. According to Main Street Wetumpka, more than $15 million has been invested in downtown over the past 10 years, including $7,242,896 in public investment and $8,043,523 in private investment.

Greene said those numbers represent far more than construction projects.

“Those numbers represent more than dollars spent,” she said. “They represent belief in downtown Wetumpka. They represent entrepreneurs opening their doors, property owners investing in historic buildings, partners supporting our vision and a community choosing to invest in its future.”

As Main Street Wetumpka begins its second decade, Greene said the organization plans to continue building on that momentum while preserving the character that has made downtown a destination.

Although June marked the conclusion of the organization’s monthlong anniversary celebration, Main Street Wetumpka said the festivities are not over. The organization is encouraging residents to watch for details about its upcoming “10 Years Under the Lights” celebration, which will highlight the next chapter of downtown Wetumpka’s continued growth and revitalization.
