Stanhope Elmore’s girls’ basketball team had two seniors sign Letters of Intent to play college basketball next year. Aubrey Newton, a sharpshooting guard for the Mustangs, signed with Lurleen B. Wallace Community College, while Teonna Davis, a strong defensive and rebounding presence, signed with Southern Union Community College. Included below is a portion of the comments made by Newton and Davis, along with SEHS Girls’ Basketball Head Coach Kelvin Stokes.

“Today is a really special day for me,” said Newton. “And I want to start off by thanking God and give Him all the glory. I would not be here without Him today. I also want to thank my mom and dad. Thank you for pushing me and supporting me with every decision I made on and off the court. To my dad, thank you for all the time you spent rebounding for me, training me, and helping me all throughout the summer being the best I can be. Thank you to Coach Stokes, Coach Hardy, and Coach Coleman for a wonderful final season…That being said, I am going to further my education and athletic career at Lurleen B Wallace Community College.”

Coach Stokes also provided some remarks about Newton prior to the signing.

“She can shoot that thing!” Stokes highlighted at the onset, also noting that Newton had a career game in the Mustangs’ biggest home game of the season, knocking down eight 3-pointers in a victory over Wetumpka.

“Aubrey was one of the babies coming through the school camps. She always won the best shooter award here, and I just knew that she could shoot that basketball. When Aubrey gets on a roll, it is lights out…She is a great young lady to coach,” said Head Coach Kelvin Stokes.

Davis also spoke prior to her signing.

“First, I want to thank God for giving me this opportunity.  To my parents and family, thank you for believing in me. To my coaches, thank you for pushing me…I have decided to sign with Southern Union,” said Davis.

Coach Stokes raved about Davis’ presence on the court for the Mustangs’ this past season.

“She was the anchor of our defense, and she was a 10 and 10 girl. It is going to be very hard to replace her. It does not matter whatever I give them (in practice), it is always ‘yes sir’ or ‘no sir’ with her. (Southern Union) has a great young lady coming. From Day 1, she is going to be a hard worker. She is athletic, she is tough, she is strong, she is so versatile.”
