Sen. Clyde Chambliss honored the Stanhope Elmore High School (SEHS) boys’ bowling team during a resolution presentation recognizing the team’s achievement as the 2026 Alabama High School Athletic Association (AHSAA) Class 6A/7A state champions.

“This is a special day and a special resolution,” Chambliss said during the presentation. He also spoke with players about their plans after high school, with many expressing goals both on and off the lanes.

The presentation highlighted the team’s historic season, marking the first state championship win in the history of the SEHS boys’ bowling program.

The Mustangs secured the title Jan. 30, 2026, at Bowlero Bowling Center in Mobile, defeating Hoover High School in a comeback victory after trailing late in the competition. The team rallied to win by a narrow margin, finishing with a total of 1,559 pins.

The championship run was especially notable given the team’s small roster of six players, leaving little room for substitutions throughout the tournament.

“We recognized the team at our board meeting a few weeks ago. They have done a great job,” said Superintendent Richard Dennis. “I’m proud of them. That’s two championships in three years.”

According to the resolution presented by Chambliss, the victory reflects years of dedication and perseverance from both current and former team members since the program’s reinstatement during the 2015-16 school year.

Several athletes were also recognized for their individual achievements. Seth Wilson was named the No. 1 bowler at the tournament, while Drake Abbott ranked No. 7. Wilson and Ryan Best were also selected to the Alabama High School Bowling Coaches Association First Team All-State and the 6A/7A state team.

Under the leadership of head coach Kenny Wilson, who was named AHSAA Coach of the Year, the team demonstrated resilience throughout the season. Assistant coach Bridget Wilson also played a key role in supporting the team’s success.

The resolution formally commended the players and coaching staff for their accomplishments and contributions to local athletics.

In addition to their state title, the Stanhope Elmore bowling program is now preparing to compete at the national level. Both the boys and girls teams have qualified for the 2026 U.S. High School Bowling National Championship in Columbus, Ohio. The program is currently seeking community support to help cover travel and competition expenses.
