Students in the Medical Sciences program at the Elmore County Technical Center will soon be training alongside a new kind of patient, one powered by artificial intelligence. During a campus tour following last Friday’s ribbon cutting for the school’s new diesel mechanic shop, guests were introduced to the Alex Gen AI Pro Simulation Mannequin, a high-tech training tool designed to transform how future healthcare workers learn clinical and patient care skills.

“We are excited to have this technology available to our students in the Medical Sciences Program,” said Emilie Johnson, director of the Elmore County Technical Center. “It will provide them with technical and diagnostic training as well as practice interacting with and caring for patients.”

Johnson said the mannequin offers a remarkably realistic experience, allowing users to hold full conversations and observe symptoms such as wheezing in real time. Powered by generative artificial intelligence, the Alex Gen AI Pro goes beyond traditional simulation tools by combining hands-on medical procedure training with opportunities to develop communication and bedside manners.

The mannequin and its supporting equipment were funded through a $100,000 Career and Technical Education Innovation and Modernization Grant from the Alabama State Department of Education. The grant also covered accessories for the mannequin, specialized training, a hospital bed and mattress, and a Lull machine for the welding program, which will be shared across construction courses.

Elmore County Commissioner Desirae Lewis, who attended the ribbon cutting and campus tour, said she was impressed by the new addition to the Medical Sciences wing.

Educators say technology represents a significant step forward in preparing students for real-world healthcare environments, where both technical expertise and human connection are critical.

As the Elmore County Technical Center continues to expand its career training programs, the addition of the Alex Gen AI Pro underscores a growing emphasis on innovation and workforce readiness. School leaders believe the investment will give students a competitive edge, equipping them with the skills and confidence needed to provide high-quality, compassionate care in an evolving healthcare landscape.
