The Alpha Delta Omicron Omega chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. and its Youth Leadership Institute (YLI) hosted a legislative day sponsored by District 69 Rep. Kelvin Lawrence, Jan. 20, 2026, at the Alabama State House, followed by a visit to Prattville City Council to share their experience.

Prattville Junior High School recently launched YLI, a youth-led, highly interactive leadership development program designed to empower and engage students through monthly activities focused on self-awareness and growth mindset development.

“What makes this group so special is that they are a first,” said Sheila Morrissette, president of the Alpha Delta Omicron Omega chapter. “Through YLI, these young ladies are learning that change begins with them as it does with all of us.”

During their visit to the State House, YLI students participated in a structured meet-and-greet with women legislators, gained firsthand insight into public service, and engaged in a student-led question-and-answer session, addressing issues affecting youth and families. The experience broadened students’ understanding of government, introduced potential career paths in public service, and reinforced leadership rooted in service.

District 2 Councilor Marcus Jackson, who also serves as a football coach at Prattville Junior High School, expressed his pride in YLI students’ growth.

“I’m extremely proud of the growth we have experienced with them,” said Jackson. “We look forward to seeing other groups come in and work with us at Prattville Junior High School because we need more community partnerships.”

Following the presentation, Mayor Bill Gillespie presented the organization with a locally made Prattville, Alabama sweatshirt in YLI’s signature misty rose color on behalf of the city.
