The Wetumpka boys’ basketball team is hoping for another successful post-season run in 2026 to follow
up last year’s area championship and 1st round playoff victory. The Indians are headed in the right
direction after a 60-53 win over Stanhope Elmore on Friday night on the Mustangs’ home floor. The
Indians are 2-0 in region play after defeating Percy Julian earlier in the week.
“Starting area play 2–0 is very important. It puts us in a good position moving forward and helps us work
toward our goal of hosting the area tournament. Getting off to a strong start in area play is always a
priority,” said Wetumpka Head Coach Steven Thomas.
The Mustangs kept the game close throughout most of the contest, with Mustangs’ sophomore sensation
Terrance Collins putting on an impressive display. Late in the 2nd quarter, Collins hit a 3-point shot and
on the following possession a strong slam dunk to put the Mustangs ahead. But the Indians immediately
responded with five points in the next 30 seconds to regain the lead, which they held for most of the
night.
“It’s always difficult to play at Stanhope, especially in a rivalry game that has a rich history. Our guys
handled adversity throughout the game and stayed composed, and that allowed us to come out with a
hard-fought road win,” said Coach Thomas.
The Mustangs cut the lead to just one point in the 4th quarter, but the Indians again showed the
experience of a team that doesn’t fall apart late in a big game on the road. The Indians worked the ball for
the best shot possible, not forcing bad shots. But the Indians aggressively attacked the lane as soon as a
good opportunity presented itself.
Chris Robinson finished with 23 points, 8 rebounds, and 7 assists for the Indians. Andrew Voyles had 18
points and Kaleb Ballard had 6 points and 5 rebounds.
“The key was our guys playing our brand of basketball — responding to adversity and stepping up in key
moments. We had some key players in foul trouble early and throughout the game, but others stepped up
and delivered when their number was called. That kind of next-man-up mentality really stood out
tonight,” said Coach Thomas.
The Mustangs will travel to Montgomery to take on Percy Julian next Tuesday, and then the Indians and
Mustangs will meet for a rematch next Friday night in Wetumpka. The Indians have a mid-week game at
Park Crossing.
According to Maxpreps, the Indians are now 14-6 on the season while the Mustangs are 8-13
