Former Prattville Lion Garrett Wilemon was one of 11 members of the Alabama State football team named to the post-season All-Southwestern Athletic Conference team. The Hornets featured five selections on the 1st team and six members on the 2nd team. In his sophomore season, Wilemon was named All SWAC 2nd team as a long snapper.

“It’s truly a blessing to be named 2nd team,” said Wilemon. “I can only thank God for allowing this to happen. But also this gives me something to look forward to as well, to work for 1st team.”

Wilemon learned just prior to the start of his sophomore season that he was being awarded a full scholarship to Alabama State. The Prattville native rewarded the Alabama State Coaching staff’s belief in him with an All-SWAC performance.

The Hornets finished the season with a 10-2 record overall and 7-1 in the SWAC East Division, including big wins over Alabama A&M and Tuskegee.

“The most memorable moment of my sophomore year was the Jackson State game this year. Although we fell short, the environment was incredible and playing in that game made every play feel crucial,” said Wilemon.

The Alabama State University website stated that Wilemon had no bad snaps on punts or field goals the entire season. Further, the Hornets did not have any blocked field goals or punts all year. But Wilemon is already looking forward to improving for his junior season.

“My goals for next season are to be 1st Team All Conference and a SWAC champion. Coach Robinson says it always starts with us so I have to work on myself to become better than I was last season,” said Wilemon.

The Prattville native is seeking a Bachelor’s Degree in Rehabilitation Services, and hopes to later get a doctorate in Physical Therapy.
