The Prattville City Council unanimously approved a $5 million tax rebate for Rural King, Sept. 16, 2025, during their regular meeting at City Hall.

Rural King, a farm and home supply chain founded in 1960, offers a wide range of products tailored to rural and agricultural lifestyles, including feed, seed, farm equipment, workwear, hunting gear, firearms, and even live chicks and livestock.

According to public records, Rural King purchased the Prattville Plaza Shopping Center in early August, formerly home to J & G Flea Market & Antique, a longtime venue for both vintage goods and local vendors.

Under the resolution, Rural King is to receive a rebate on non-educational sales taxes generated at its Prattville location. The incentive package will remain in place until the $5 million cap is met or for up to 11 years, whichever comes first.

Prattville residents were given the opportunity to provide comments to the council about the resolution regarding Rural King before the vote.

“What I am questioning is why you only have AJM in the resolution, yet the legal ad is talking about both Rural King and AJM,” said Jon Lee Finnegan, a resident of Prattville.

Another resident, Alyssa Brown, questioned why smaller local businesses have not been offered similar incentives.

“From my understanding, Rural King is already in agreement to come to Prattville regardless of the tax rebate,” said Brown.

Council members offered no additional discussion before the resolution passed without opposition.
