Wetumpka, Ala. – The Wetumpka YMCA kicks off its $1.2 million makeover, Aug. 14, 2025, with a groundbreaking ceremony.

The goal is to create a more welcoming, functional, and inspiring space, featuring a brand-new Wellness Center, a modern group exercise studio, a playful new Childwatch, expanded parking, and dedicated spaces for youth and adult programs.

“This YMCA has had a long history of lineage, legacy, and impact in our community, and we want to sustain that for the future for new families and kids,” said AJ Hernandez, President and CEO of the Wetumpka YMCA.

The Wetumpka YMCA has served 1,150 members and touched the lives of more than 5,000 individuals so far this year, including 119 children in after-school care, 250 children at summer camp, 400 children in swim lessons, and nearly 700 children in sports programs.

Each course emphasizes character development through honesty, respect, and responsibility to help enrich the spirits, minds, and bodies of the community.

“This is more than bricks and mortar,” said Bart Mercer, Elmore County Commissioner for District 4. “It’s an investment in the health, growth, and future of our families.”

Renovations may cause relocated equipment and limited access in certain areas, but they are scheduled to be completed before next summer.
