On Thursday, Millbrook Middle School hosted their annual Divas and Donuts event in the cafeteria. Over 150 female students attended with their mothers and mother figures.
“Divas and Donuts is a great event at MMS that gives mothers, and mother figures the opportunity to spend quality time at school,” said Tarica Lamar, Principal of MMS.
This year Dr. La Shelia Garrett, the Instructional Coach for MMS, was the guest speaker. Letitia Ruffin-Johnson, Assistant Principal for 5/6th grade was in charge of putting together this event.
Principal Lamar said, “We try our best to bring in a speaker that motivates the students and guests. Dr. Garrett was a no brainer to be our speaker being that this is her retirement year. She was phenomenal and I look forward to next year’s event.”
All guests enjoyed donuts from Kingdom Dough, coffee, and juice. Door prizes were provided by the school.
Dr. Garrett was introduced by her daughter, Arion Albert, MMS Intervention Aide.
Her message to the young girls was inspirational. “You can be anything you want to be. There is more to you than your clothes, cliques, or curves. Your value and your worth are more important. Your world is in your hands, and you are in control of your destiny.”
She finished her speech by reading a scripture from the Bible, Psalm 139:14, which reads, “I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful.” Garrett said she learned that lesson.
Dr. Garrett spoke to EAN and wanted to share this quote to all of the girls with their mothers and mother figures.
“We all have the ability to create the life we want by the choices we make. Choose well.”
Principal Lamar spoke on how important it is to see parents come to the school and be involved in the child’s life. She also had the opportunity to speak about the upcoming ACAP testing that will happen this week and next week. She stated it is very important that students to arrive at school on time and to have a good night’s rest before testing begins.
“Make good friends, think about what your doing, you are great, you are beautiful, you are wonderfully made,” said Assistant Principal RJ.
