A note from Central Elmore Water and Sewer Authority

From Central Elmore Water

and Sewer Authority – CEW&SA

The taste and odor issues that you are experiencing are a result of Geosmin and/or MIB which are naturally occurring compounds found in surface water; such as Lake Martin and Lake Jordan. CEW&SA monitors these levels monthly using specific sampling. The May sample results showed that Geosmin and MIB numbers are on the rise. The compounds are not toxic or harmful. Neither are regulated through ADEM or EPA.

CEW&SA has been making every effort to combat the nuisance of the compound since it first appeared in 2013. CEW&SA recently met with ADEM to request funding for a Granular Activated Carbon (GAC) system. There was an indication that some funding could become available for CEW&SA by the end of the year. On May 29th, CEW&SA met with consulting engineers to prepare to move forward with plans for a GAC system for submittal to ADEM.  The GAC system will help to lower Geosmin and MIB levels; which will help with the taste and odor issues.

Some options available to customers who are sensitive to the compound to help lessen the severity of the taste and odor issues are the following:

1. Install a carbon-based filter system on your faucet. You may already have one installed in your refrigerator.

2. Store water in your refrigerator to keep it at a cool temperature.

3. Add lemon to your drinking water.

See our website for additional details about these compounds.
