A small red box standing in the front of a Millbrook church is turning out to be a big blessing for the community.
A little more than a year ago, St. Michael & All Angels’ Episcopal Church expanded its outreach ministry with its Blessing Box program. The concept is simple – the box is filled with food and other items that might fill a need. “If you need a blessing, take a blessing. If you have a blessing, leave a blessing,” the box informs the passerby.
Church member Susan Allen said she got the idea from a Facebook post and thought it would be a great addition to the church’s outreach program.
Senior Church Warden Rebecca Robbins said lately the box seems to be emptied multiple times a day. “While I hate for the need to be so great, I am glad to see that this ministry is helping our community,” she said in the church’s weekly newsletter. “If you are able, please pick up some extra groceries while at the store this week. You can drop them off directly inside the box,” she said.
Some of the items needed for the box include canned vegetables, ramen noodles, canned fruit, soups, raviolis, bags of rice, pasta meals, peanut butter and diapers.
“If you find yourself needing some help, know that you are welcome to visit the Blessing Box at any time,” Robbins said.
The church is located at 5941 Main Street in Millbrook. For more information, contact Robbins at (334) 318-4187.
