From Alabama Power
When record-breaking cold temperatures and severe winter weather hit the state — such as Winter Storms Cora and Enzo — customers use more electricity than normal to raise the temperature in their homes, resulting in higher energy bills. With more winter weather expected this week, Alabama Power wants to connect customers with community partners that can help with winter bills as well as remind them about tools and resources the company has available to help monitor and manage their energy use.
It takes more energy to heat your home in the cold winter months than to cool it in the hot summer months. The greater the difference between the outdoor temperature and your thermostat setting, the harder your system must work. Typically, the average low in January across Alabama is around 36 degrees. In January 2025, the average low was 28 degrees, according to the National Weather Service.
Weather changes are beyond anyone’s control, but Alabama Power is committed to supporting customers experiencing temporary financial difficulties by connecting them with payment assistance programs and resources to help manage energy bills. The company also collaborates with numerous community partners to provide help to those who need it.
