From the Elmore County EMA
Editor’s Note: Some areas of western Autauga County are “slight risk” category. This wave of storms will impact our general readership area from 4 p.m. until midnight according to the latest graphics. Please stay weather aware.
Good Thursday morning everyone, The NWS Birmingham’s most recent forecast update for the potential severe weather this evening is shown in the graphic.
Today will be windy with gusts 30+ mph throughout the day before the storms arrive. This could bring down weak trees and possibly cause downed power lines.·
Elmore County is in the “marginal” risk area, but please don’t pay attention to the colors because everyone is at risk for severe weather today. A slight shift in the instability could change things drastically. STAY WEATHER AWARE!·
It is almost certain that at some point today, Elmore County will go under a Tornado Watch. When that will be is unknown, but the webinar yesterday made it clear that watches will be issued today.· This will be a fast moving front so rainfall should stay around 1” for our area, but any storms that train over an area could cause locally higher amounts.· T
he highest threat for Elmore County appears to be straight line winds coming through as the storm front passes. Winds could be 60-70 mph inside these severe thunderstorms.· Our time frame is still very broad. But, the forecast is for the front to pass through our area between 6:00 – 11:00 p.m.
Please have multiple ways to get severe weather notifications inside your home! Preferably a NOAA weather radio. Do NOT depend on outdoor weather sirens to be heard inside your home!·
Safer Places will be activated when we go under a tornado watch. We will post on our social media sites and update our webpage the places that are able to open shortly after the watch. Website map link: https://www.google.com/maps/d/viewer…
