Prattville lost a titan of the community.

Former Prattville head coach, former state representative, and fixture at Prattville First Baptist Church Horace Powell passed away yesterday.

Here is what the late Jimmy White wrote in his book “Hooray For Prattville : 100 Years of Prattville Football” about his long time friend.

From 1965-1968 the head coach for Autauga County High School (Prattville) was Horace Powell. Powell was the first Prattville coach to defeat a Montgomery high school. His 1968 team knocked off undefeated Jeff Davis at Prattville September 27, 1968, 13-0. Powell is the only Lions coach to have a team to play in a post season bowl game. His 1965 team played Union Springs High School in the Camellia Bowl in Greenville.

The post season game was put on by the Greenville Chamber of Commerce from 1963-1970. Powell’s team lost to Union Springs 13-0.

Powell had a four-year career record of 27-13-1.

Powell left the coaching and teaching profession and began a successful career with New York Life. He also ran successfully for the state House of Representatives in 1990. He served until 1994.

He is a native of Billingsley where he graduated high school in 1951. He served his country in the US Army from 1953-1955. He graduated from Howard College with a BS degree in 1958 and earned a master’s degree from Auburn University in 1963. – Jimmy White
