Longtime friends, roommates, and Prattville Civitan Club members, John Bryant and Frank “Paul” Carwell, have added a new sport to their active lifestyles as they prepare to compete in the 2026 Special Olympics. The pair recently took up golf, a challenge that has quickly become a meaningful part of their weekly routine.
Bryant and Carwell, who live independently with support from Autauga Elmore Developmental Services, joined the inclusive golf team at the RTJ Golf Trail at Capitol Hill in September. The program introduces athletes with disabilities to the fundamentals of the game, emphasizing technique, etiquette, and confidence-building.
“We are really happy to have something fun to do outside,” said Carwell. “It gives us something to look forward to.”
Over the past several months, the two have worked to refine their swing mechanics and learn the rules of the course. While a hole-in-one remains their favorite practice moment, they said the sport also teaches patience and perseverance.
“We both feel good about playing golf,” said Bryant. “Sometimes, it can be frustrating getting the ball to go in, but we try to stay focused.”
With only two practices remaining, Bryant and Carwell are preparing to represent the Prattville Civitan Club in the 2026 Special Olympics golf events at Troy University, a milestone they’ve been working toward since the day they picked up their first clubs.
