The Prattville Fire Department (PFD) honors its commitment to local safety, offering free smoke alarms and participating in Fire Prevention Week (FPW), Oct. 5–11, 2025.

Through the statewide initiative Get Alarmed, Alabama!, Prattville firefighters will install smoke detectors in homes at no cost to residents within their service area. The program aims to reduce the risk of fire-related deaths, as Alabamians are statistically twice as likely to die because of a fire.

“Having working smoke alarms in your home is the number one thing a person can do to protect themselves and their family,” said Jason Cupps, Captain of the PFD. “If they aren’t in place in good working order, then they’re no help, so this program is such a valuable resource for our departments and our community.”

This year’s FPW theme, “Charge into Fire Safety: Lithium-Ion Batteries in Your Home,” focuses on a growing household hazard—battery safety. The campaign encourages residents to remember three key words: BUY, CHARGE, and RECYCLE.

“We have three main points we are trying to drive home this year,” said Cupps. “Don’t BUY cheap chargers not intended for your device, only CHARGE on hard, flat surfaces, stop charging when the battery reaches 100%, and RECYCLE batteries instead of throwing them away, which can start trash fires.”

From responding to emergencies to preventing them, the PFD’s mission remains the same—to protect lives and property. Initiatives like Get Alarmed, Alabama! and Charge into Fire Safety reflect their continued dedication to that goal.
