Millbrook Police warn about potential phone scam directed at older residents

Elmore Autauga News

The Millbrook Police Department is warning the community about fraudulent phone calls regarding a customer survey at a local drug store. This is a reminder to never share personal identifying information over the telephone or computer.

From Chief P.K. Johnson

Millbrook Police Department

This is a press release regarding possible fraudulent activity that is being conducted, via telephone solicitation, in our immediate area. The Millbrook Police Department was contacted by one of our local independent drug stores, who have received phone calls from concerned customers reporting that they have been contacted by an alleged company claiming to be conducting a customer survey on the drug store’s behalf.

The business has not authorized anyone to conduct any survey or any other business on its behalf. The Millbrook Police Department’s Criminal Investigations Unit researched the phone number given by the businesses representative and found the number to be associated with similar reports of fraudulent activity or commonly referred to as phone scams. This is where person(s) contact individuals, most often targeting the elderly, in an attempt to gain access to their personal identifying information, which they in turn will attempt to use for their own financial gain.

The Millbrook Police Department wishes to make citizens aware of this activity and strongly advises any citizens to refrain from sharing their personal identifying information, especially over the telephone or computer. Anyone that has done so should immediately check with their bank or other financial institutions for any unauthorized transactions, reporting any fraudulent activity to local law enforcement authorities.
