Alabama considering adopting legislation requiring parental consent to download apps

From Meta

Elmore Autauga News

As most of you know, Alabama is considering adopting legislation that would require app stores to get parental consent before teens can download apps onto their devices (AL bill passed SB187/HB317 in the Senate last week). We’ve now seen broad momentum for this legislation across the country, with more than 25 percent of states including Alabama (13 states as of today) considering this regulatory solution to online teen safety.

We wanted to flag for you that Utah just became the first state in the country that passed a bill (UT SB 142) requiring this approach and it’s now headed to the Governor’s desk for signature.

Since Alabama legislation is modeled after Utah, and it could very well be the next state to pass a bill like this, I want to share the joint statement from Meta, Snap, and X on passage of Utah App Store Accountability Act that we just released, in case you are interested in any follow up coverage:

“Parents want a one-stop shop to verify their child’s age and grant permission for them to download apps in a privacy-preserving way. The app store is the best place for it, and more than a quarter of states have introduced bills recognizing the central role app stores play. We applaud Utah for putting parents in charge with its landmark legislation and urge Congress to follow suit.”
