A man who reportedly shot a family member, has died after he was shot by a supervisor and deputy with the Elmore County Sheriff’s Office overnight near Eclectic overnight.

According to Elmore County Sheriff Bill Franklin, issues began Monday afternoon, when deputies responded to a domestic incident on Cherokee Trail. Once there, deputies were advised by family members that everything was okay, Franklin said, and deputies left with no services needed.

However, several hours later just before midnight, deputies responded again when a family member called for help to say that one brother had shot another brother.

“In that call, the mother called and said one of her sons had been shot by another son,” Franklin said.

When deputies arrived, they learned that Darrin Gray, 56, had reportedly shot his brother, Cecil Gray, 61, in the leg. Deputies reported hearing someone say “My brother is trying to kill me.”

Deputies tried to enter a shed on the property but the door was closed. “They retained a tool to make entry, but they were confronted by a man identified as Darrin Gray with a gun in one hand and a flashlight in the other.”

Franklin said both the supervisor and deputy spoke with Darrin Gray for several minutes, advising him to put his weapon down.

“When Darrin Gray pointed the weapon at them, both the deputy and supervisor fired, and called for medical assistance,” Franklin said.

Cecil Gray was located in a nearby  residence  and had sustained a gunshot to the leg, reportedly from his brother Darrin. Both men were treated for their injuries.

The sheriff’s office was notified several hours later that the suspect Darrin Gray had died from his injuries at an area hospital, and the brother Cecil, is recovering from his wounds.

Because the deputies involved in the shooting of Darrin Gray are Elmore County deputies, the incident has been turned over to the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency, which will investigate.

The only further comment Franklin would make is “Area law enforcement is very familiar with Darrin Gray.”
