With the flick of a switch, Christmas season began in downtown Prattville Thursday, as the tree was illuminated. A backdrop of snow, an ice skating rink, plenty of food and shopping opportunities drew a big crowd for the festivities. Santa and Mrs. Claus made their arrival then posed for photos for families and kids alike.
“Tonight was a special night for so many people. A lot of people building memories with fun, family things to do. A lot of folks have come down because of the ice skating rink, and the weather report is for snow,” Mayor Bill Gillespie said. He added that seeing the crowd and the smiles warms his heart. He wants the excitement and positivity to carry into the New Year.
Prattville City Councilor Marcus Jackson for District 2 said, “Tonight was awesome for everyone in the city. The tree lighting is an event that I look forward to every year. The holiday season is the time to reflect on our blessings and to look for ways to make the lives of our citizens better. This is why we as Councilors and the City of Prattville employees work so hard for moments like these. The Snow Globe, Christmas lights, and new addition of the ice skating are wonderful winter activities in the historical district. I hope that all of our citizens get out and enjoy what our city has to offer this holiday season.”
The downtown area is dressed to impress, as the Parks and Recreation Crew has, once again, knocked it out of the park in their efforts to light up the season.
Families walked throughout downtown, visiting shops, getting tickets for ice skating, and grabbing dinner.
Tonight at 7 p.m. is the Prattville Parade, and we will have more coverage on that this weekend.
