Elmore Volunteer Fire Department Receives Better Classification from Insurance Services Office

With a Better ISO Rating, Elmore Residents could see Savings on Homeowners Insurance

ELMORE – Homeowners living in the Elmore Fire Department’s Fire District could see a decrease in their homeowner’s insurance premiums. The department recently completed an ISO reevaluation and received a 04/4X rating down from the previous 5/5X rating. The reduction will potentially result in a lower rate to homeowner’s insurance that are within five miles of the fire station and located within 1,000 feet of a hydrant. The new rating goes into effect June 1, 2021.

ISO collected and evaluated information from the community on our structure fire suppression capabilities. The data was analyzed using the Fire Suppression Rating Schedule (FSRS) and then a Public Protection Classification (PPC©) grade was assigned to the community. The surveys are conducted whenever it appears that there is a possibility of a PPC change and in the case of the Elmore Fire Department such a change existed. The PPC program provides important, up-to-date information about fire protection services throughout the country.

According to ISO, each insurance company independently determines the premiums it charges its policyholders. The way a company uses ISO’s information on public fire protection could depend on several factures to include – the company’s fire-loss experience, ratemaking methodology, underwriting guidelines, and its marketing strategy.

“This new classification is a culmination of community support and the outstanding volunteers that serve on our department. We hope this will be a tremendous benefit for the citizens we serve,” Chief Brandon Cardwell said. “Our department works continually to maintain the highest level of service and provide the best fire protection for those living in and around our district.”

To earn the new classification, the department has maintained adequate fire apparatus and equipment.

The department also built a new fire station in 2018. Other elements the department was evaluated on included the number of firefighters on roster, firefighter’s equipment, documented training, available      water flow and communications and dispatch capabilities. Department officials must continually work to maintain this new level through up-to-date equipment, preventative maintenance, routine training and active firefighter recruitment.

The Elmore Fire Department is an all-volunteer department that serves the Speigner, Ceasarville, Flatwoods, Sweetnin’ Communities and has a contract to provide fire protection to the Town of Elmore and it’s police jurisdiction.
